The History of

In late 1997, a Metroport Meals On Wheels task force assessed the opportunity to open a resale shop benefiting MMOW in Roanoke. The task force then began turning the vision into reality. They rented a location across the street from Babe’s, enlisted volunteers and transformed the plain vanilla building on Oak Street into an inviting boutique.

The resale shop was named after MMOW's first participant, Sadie England. It didn’t take long for the popular shop to outgrow its original location.

Sam Lee donated a section house located a few blocks from Sadie’s for the overflow and Sadie’s Attic was born, As we burst the seams of the section house, Shane Murphy offered space for Sadie’s Attic in his building next door to Sadie’s. Both operations continued to grow and in 2001, Sadie’s was once again bursting at the seams in both locations.

MMOW purchased a building at the corner of Denton Street and U.S. 377 at a deeply discounted price that allowed the organization to combine both Sadie’s locations and the offices of MMOW.

The new home, which is still in use today, gave Sadie’s an opportunity to display furniture, household items, linens and other merchandise in an artistically pleasing manner that attracted many customers looking for good merchandise at a good price.

What you find at Sadie’s is more distinctive merchandise at great prices. Our shoppers love coming to Sadie’s because they have a good time and they feel that coming to the store is like going on a treasure hunt. They never know what they might find.
