For the past two winters, the heater stopped
working in the main eating area at the Justin Senior Center. Amber
Angel, Justin Senior Center Coordinator, held the lunches at local
churches until the heater could be replaced.
After a new heater was installed more good news
followed. Kristine Peterson, owner of Details by Design, and Kristy
Poche-Smith, NWISD Interior Design teacher, adopt a worthy cause every
year. This year they chose the Justin Senior Center.
The 60 students of Ms. Poche-Smith raised money by
painting ceiling tiles and selling them at Northwest High School. Once
the money was raised the students went to work painting, installing
wallpaper and creating faux stained glass on the windows. The seniors
brought the students pictures of Justin - past and present - along with a
paper someone had written in the 7th grade on the history of Justin.
The students copied the information and turned it into a one-of-a-kind,
functional, lasting keepsake. The students decoupaged these items onto a
table for use in the center.
Kevin Magee of KLM Flooring in Irving also got into
the spirit by donating and installing new carpet in the main room and
tile in the kitchen. Bill Owens, Jr. fixed all of the electrical outlets
and upgraded the quality of lighting throughout the center. The Justin
Civic Foundation donated money for a new microwave and convection oven.
Vickie Parsons donated $500 toward the remodeling efforts and the Justin
Progressive Women’s Club donated money to remodel the walk-in pantry.
The Justin seniors are thrilled with the
improvements and enjoyed the interaction with the students. It is
amazing to see such a dedicated spirit in a community. Thank you to
everyone who made this center safer, beautiful and more comfortable.
